Proper design and construction of foundations can only be accomplished with proper knowledge of the soil conditions. A geotechnical study, including subsurface in-situ exploration and laboratory testing should be done for each substructure element. The extent of this investigation should be commensurate with the importance of the structure and the project requirements. At a minimum, the geotechnical reports should include information on the allowable bearing pressure, the groundwater table elevation, the unit weight of soils, angle of internal friction, cohesion strength, and any other geotechnical features which could affect the design of the foundation.
